  • Keep your liquid diet chilled – by either keeping it in
the fridge or keeping it in a flask during the day.
It tastes much nicer if it is cold.

  • If you are going to school, ask your parents to make up your
liquid diet in the morning and take it in a flask – this will help to keep it cool.

  • Drink your liquid diet through a straw – this makes it much easier to take.

  • You can buy a milkshake mix to flavour your liquid diet – this can make it tastier. Ask your dietitian.

  • Ask your parents to make it into ice-lollies.  This can be a tasty way to take your liquid diet, especially if it’s a hot day.

  • If it’s a cold day, you can warm it slightly – but make sure you don’t boil it.

  • Make sure you drink extra water each day as it’s important that you give your body enough fluid every day.

  • Keep your mouth and teeth clean and fresh by brushing your teeth on a regular basis.

A:  When you are taking your liquid diet it can be difficult to explain to your friends and family why you can’t eat the foods they are having.  But you might find that they are interested to know more about what you are drinking. Sentences like the ones below may help you to explain:

“I am taking a special liquid diet at the moment to help heal my digestive system – so I can’t eat any other foods”

“I am drinking a special liquid diet to rest my digestive system”

“This is a special liquid diet which contains all of the nutrients my body needs.  I am taking this to rest my digestive system”

Why not jot down some sentences now so that you have them prepared just in case anyone asks.

A: You shouldn't feel pressured to eat something that may make you feel unwell. If you explain to your friends that you need to take the liquid diet to help you get better, they should understand.

A:  Just because you are taking a liquid diet shouldn’t mean that you miss out on all the fun.  So you can either take your liquid diet with you in a flask or drink it before you go. Be sure to tell your friends that you still want to join in with all the fun but you just won’t be eating any of the party food.

A:  Once again, you should not have to miss out on a day out. So make up your liquid diet in the morning and take it with you in a flask and cooler bag. You can then drink it when you are out and about. Make sure you also drink plenty of water when you are out for the day.
